Standard 4
4.1 Support student participation
Identify strategies to support inclusive student participation and engagement in classroom activities.
Evidence:This standard highlights that students are capable and active learners and should be given opportunities to demonstrate this. I would like to use a range of ICT that appeals to the diverse learning of my future classes.
In particular I believe that Edmodo will be an effective tool that can be useful for all students; with the ability to upload videos, photos, assignment information etc. It will be an invaluable resource. It also gives the students the opportunity to drive their own learning. On my second practicum experience at Golden Grove High School, I was able to regularly use Edmodo with the students to implement curriculum and share resources.
Attended a Professional Development session at the 2014 JLTASA Conference entitled "Creating an Effective Classroom for Teaching Nihongo" which covered various ways to encourage and support student participation in the Japanese classroom (Certificate can be found at bottom of this page)
4.2 Manage classroom activities
Demonstrate the capacity to organise classroom activities and provide clear instructions.
Evidence:
This standard should mostly be met with support from the school. Generally schools have ICT remote monitoring to make sure that inappropriate use of the technology is not happening and is not possible.
As a teacher I would make sure to wander the room (if for example we were in a computer suite) and monitor the students work to make sure they were on track and support them if they have any questions or concerns.
Attended a Professional Development session at the 2014 JLTASA Conference entitled "Creating an Effective Classroom for Teaching Nihongo" which discussed ways to manage classroom activities to be the most effective for student learning and time management. 4.3 Manage challenging behaviour
Demonstrate knowledge of practical approaches to manage challenging behaviour.
Evidence:
Managing challenging behaviour in a classroom with technology can indeed be challenging. But I would make sure students were aware of their responsibilities before beginning the activity. If students become too rowdy with the technology available, they will be given a choice to rethink their behaviour and then continue using the technology, or to lose the privilege of the technology and complete the task on paper. I believe this will be a good way to let students see that while we can use technology for many things now, if we don't treat our peers/the equipment with respect then there is always the old fashioned way of pen and paper. I believe that the school would probably have an ample supply of technology for each of the students in the class, so everyone will have equal opportunity to use it. Taking into account that some students may not have access to it outside of the classroom.
I have had experience giving yard duties/time out/ after school detention
4.4 Maintain student safety
Describe strategies that support students' wellbeing and safety working within school and/or system curriculum and legislative requirements.
Evidence:
One of the main roles of the teacher is to ensure students well being, as it is in our duty of care. Thus this standard is very important.
When using the Internet and technology there are many risks out there. Some ways to prevent these could be to ensure that unsafe websites are blocked through the schools network and that students are made aware of the reasons why they are unsafe. Also with using learning platforms such as Edmodo, access to student’s information is restricted to the teacher and groups are locked once all students have joined to prevent strangers from posting inappropriate things.
4.5 Use ICT safely, responsibly and ethically
Demonstrate an understanding of the relevant issues and the strategies available to support the safe, responsible and ethical use of ICT in learning and teaching.
Evidence:
This standard again emphasises the teachers’ role of protecting students’ well being. Students need to be made aware of the issues that can occur when using technology and what not to do. Knowing the legislature is very important to understanding what is acceptable and what is not, and the schools policies should highlight the role of technology and have specific policies in place to ensure students know to respect things such as ethical uses of resources, copyright, intellectual property, laws, etc.
Some students may not know about the implications of offending these policies and should be reminded before an activity using technology begins, or at the start of the term. An example that was used in my high school was that students had the read and signed a technology agreement, where it stated that students would act responsibly and ethically using the technology and digital resources available or they would lose the privilege to use it.
