Standard 2
2.1: Content and teaching of the teaching area
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts, substance and structure of the content and teaching strategies of the teaching area.
Evidence:
As a language teacher it is going to be important to use a variety of different resources and materials when teaching.
Not only this but utilising a variety of presentation styles and finding different and interesting ways to present and discuss information with the students is also important. Students are very tech savvy nowadays, and are generally find computers/iPods/Ipad etc. very easy to use, almost like second nature.
This is why it is important to present and make information available to them in ways that they will appreciate and most likely use.
Teachers can monitor what the students have access too in the school environment, so there is a good level of cyber security in place. Also by using technology it gives all students the equal access to information and resources.
Good technologies to implement in the classroom include the Ipad (many schools have Ipads available to each of their students now), Prezi (more interactive PowerPoint like tool), smart boards (interactive and good for recording lessons for future reference by students and teachers) etc.
Technology is a great way to present the content to students in a variety of ways creating new platforms of teaching strategies where the students and teachers can interact and engage in activities and discussions more easily.
2.2: Content selection and organisation
Organise content into an effective learning and teaching sequence.
Evidence:
Making content available digitally is so easy nowadays.
For language teaching, having access to digital content is very important. With so many resources available it makes language learning and teaching much more authentic.
With platforms such as Edmodo you can create a social network of learning for all of your students. This can make access to course information, resources, learning tools and assignments much easier. This also gives students a chance to ask questions about the course where teachers and fellow classmates can give feedback. Creating a supportive learning environment.
2.3: Curriculum, assessment and reporting
Use curriculum assessment and reporting knowledge to design learning sequences and lesson plans.
Evidence:
This substandard of assessment and reporting can be accomplished very easy for students and teachers by using digital technology.
When creating lessons and learning sequences, teachers can use digital resources to collect a variety of information and resources for further learning and make it available to students. Having it digital means that it can’t get scrunched up in the bottom of a bag or lost accidentally, thus making it more convenient for students and teachers.
Again using Edmodo as an example of assessment and reporting, teachers can upload details of assessment tasks with videos or webpages linked to it that might be useful and also have the deadlines and rubrics available on there so it can be checked, and students can access this information anywhere at anytime! Students can also upload their assignments directly.
Other ideas for Edmodo and assessment could be having polls or questions posted and students need to complete them, and teachers can give instant quick feedback or make reports on learning and development of students.
2.4: Understand and respect people and promote conciliation
Demonstrate broad knowledge of understanding of and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and languages.
Evidence:
This is definitely one of the hardest but of course very important sub-standards to address in a foreign language classroom. I agree with the other posters comments about making sure that any content that is shown such as videos are culturally appropriate. This goes for all cultures. Knowing your students and their backgrounds can really help you to determine what content and resources are appropriate, and what ones will be most effective for their learning.
When learning language, students are often encouraged to talk about their own cultures and make connections and links to the culture and language of instruction.
The emphasis on making sure any digital (or non-digital) material that is made available to students is culturally appropriate and engages their learning.
2.5: Literacy and Numeracy strategies
Know and understand literacy and numeracy teaching strategies and their application in teaching areas.
Evidence:
Using digital technology is a very convenient way to utilise literacy and numeracy strategies. In Australia there is a big emphasis on improving literacy and numeracy skills, and this must be seen in the classroom and lesson planning.
Technology such as the interactive whiteboard can be a very useful tool for working on these skills. Students can interactively read and write content directly onto the screen, and it can be saved and referenced or worked on again in future. Tools such as this really support all students in improving their skills, especially effective for group lessons where the students can collaborate and work together.
Attended a Professional Development session at the 2014 JLTASA Conference entitled "日本語で俳句を作ろう/ Let's make Haiku in Japanese" which discussed the role of literacy in language and the differences between English and Japanese cultures when it comes to the written word (Certificate can be found at bottom of this page)
2.6: Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
Implement teaching strategies for using ICT to expand curriculum learning opportunities for students.
Evidence:
Information and Communication Technology should be not be used as a 'gimmick' in the classroom, but rather for genuine and interactive learning.
With more and more technology becoming widely and easily available in schools there are many opportunities to make learning a fun and worthwhile experience for students in ways that appeal to them. In a language classroom, there is a common misconception that it is all fun and games and no 'authentic learning' as such, this can also be a general thought when it comes to using technology in the classroom.
There is no reason why we can’t make the learning fun, but as long as it is relevant and with purpose. Technology can really help us as teachers to achieve this, with lots of resources available. Technology also creates opportunities for ALL students to improve their learning in ways that suit their learning needs and personal needs individually.
