Personal Statement:
In December 2013 I will have completed 5 years of study at the University of Adelaide; undergoing a double degree in Arts and Teaching. My two areas of interest are Japanese and Chinese language. I would like to learn more about both languages and their cultures, I also have an interest in learning other languages such as Swedish. I am passionate to learn more about other cultures and would love to travel and see more of the world.
What kind of Teacher am I?
During my studies I had the wonderful opportunity to expand my knowledge of Japan by spending a year abroad at Kansai University, where I improved my own Japanese language proficiency and learned more about the culture firsthand.
Whilst in Japan I completed the JLPT-Japanese language proficiency test and passed the N3 level. I also had the opportunity to tutor English and hold a volunteer English conversational class at the University.
From my practical experiences working with primary aged students in the OSHC capacity and with the older students in a High school environment, I have been developing a firm but fair approach to teaching. I like to be approachable if students have questions and enjoy teaching classes. I strongly believe in differentiated learning approaches, and through my experiences during my practicums and through work as a Relief Teacher I have learnt a number of strategies for assessing students knowledge and altering the lesson structures to suit their learning capabilities and needs.
I hope to show students the value of learning languages and the amazing opportunities that they can have worldwide. Through my enthusiasm and passion for language learning I hope to enable students to become global citizens and broaden their understandings of the world around them.
My Personal Achievements:
-First and foremost, one of my main achievements was to complete a double degree at The University of Adelaide.
- I have been a competitive Irish dancer for over 10 years, dancing builds characters and requires dedication and commitment at a high level.
- I have competed in Japanese Kendo tournaments in Japan and South Australia. I was able to win a technique competition whilst in Japan, and achieved my first Dan level (shoudan) whilst on my exchange. The art of Kendo requires a lot of focus and training. It is a significant cultural aspect of Japan and is often done at Japanese high schools as part of their required curriculum.
-Passed the JLPT N3 (Japanese Language proficiency test) 2011
Future Goals:
- Travel around the world, to places I haven't been before
- Teach Japanese/Chinese in a school
- Teach dance and become a registered TCRG (Irish dance teacher)
- Pass the JLPT N2
